    Hi Alyssa, thanks so much for this incredibly helpful video. We are moving from Beijing to NY in 6 weeks and while I've already started crate training our dog I think I pushed him too hard. I have one more question: What do you recommend for increasing the time periods of keeping the gate closed? 1 minute intervals? How quickly should you increase the duration if your dog seems fine? Thanks a lot and all the best.

    Great tips. I was told that puppies yip when their litter mate bites too hard, and if you can yip like a pup, your pup learns to control how hard it's biting, not stopping, but learning humans are sensitive and must be treated carefully.

    I try to capture this when our cats are out, I’m not sure that using a kennel for our senior cat would help? He gets stressed in one. And our dog has been around the cats almost 2 months, it was going well and it’s now gone downhill. She’s also a teenager. The cats come out through the baby gate on their own all of the time, I do the ‘look at that’ training with treats on a leash, and also treat her when she’s calmer and starts to look at me. Not sure it’s going to work. In between she still gets keyed up sometimes.

    What if the cat is super confident and keeps rubbing up against the dog? Hahaha Ive never had a cat much like mine. She grew up with dogs. But my one dog is so hyper and loves cats too much that she finally hissed at her. So i want to figure out a way to keep them both seperated when it comes to letting the cat out of the carrier. I know how they act because the cat escaped once and they all met on way too fast of terms but no biting or attacking just sniffing and wagging tails. Last cat was introduced too fast too. As a roommate moved in. And they were fine for months. So thats why we got a cat of our own. But all cats are different. So i want things to go on the cats terms. And it seems she got peeved a tad last time because my dog noodles was like "play play play!" I guess feeding them at the same time but the cat likes my dogs food too much and she wants to eat out of the same bowl 😂

    I know it’s a very old video, but it’s impossible to find anything breed specific and useful about French Mastiffs when it comes to my situation. I adopted my Bordeaux when he was 90 days old and he was and still is a very loving and social dogs who loves all humans and is cautiously interested in other animals but not so much as humans. Now he’s 1 year and 5 months old and he is fearful and anxious when someone approaches him head on or showers him with instant attention when meeting. Despite desensitizing him to sounds when he was young he still gets freaked out by loud sounds. I just want him to be confident and I don’t know what to do

      Hi, thanks for taking the time to write in. Adolescents and early adulthood is a time where we can see stress responses peak. Most people reach out for training regarding fearful or anxious behavior when their dog is around 1-2 years of age. Most people try to take fear and anxiety head on by exposing their dog to the things that trigger them with the idea that this will "desensitize" them to the trigger. In many cases the opposite happens - the dog becomes more sensitized. Instead, the focus right now should be to build a calm connection with your dog by working within his comfort zone and building trust and communication. This is what I was doing in the video with Bruce Bruce. Ultimately the skills he was learning could be incorporated into situations that triggered fear and anxiety. This approach is the most effective way to get to the root of the problem and really see the best in your dog rise to the surface. If you're curious to learn more I have online classes. My website is legendsdogtraining.com Mat Work would be the best starting point. Thanks again for writing in and let me know if you have questions. Best, Alyssa Rose, CPDT-KA

    This is a good.video. I have a better way. I have 2 inside cats and a outside cats. I have aGSD X CHOW and a American Akita x Belgian Malinios. All animals are rescues with issues in addition to EXTREMELY HIGH PREY DRIVES. My cats are NOT afraid of dogs but with 2 large high drive dogs that would kill them if not desensitized. First I take 1 dog at a time and leave the cat on the other side of a closed door. They get use to scent and sound of each other. Once the dog becomes use to the cat scent I introduce the second dog. This usually increases the prey drive of both because of lack mentality. Next. Dogs in a crate or restrained securely cat is released. Having GOOD obedience is MANDATORY as YOU CANNOT TRAIN OUT PREY DRIVE. PREY drive is genetic and was selectively bred for in both guarding and hearding dogs. Swap out dogs or cats in the same room but one or the other crated. Make sure your cats have a SAFE place they can get to even when your traiming is complete. Most cats will climb or hide where the dogs can't get to.

      The key is to create a safe environment with barriers. I usually encourage double barriers in case a gate or a door is left open accidentally, there's always a back up. This type of training can take anywhere from 1-6 months depending on the temperament of the dog. The key is to work at your dog's pace. Plan for 1 or 2 10 minute sessions each day. Use breakfast and dinner if possible (it's helpful if both dog and cat are on a good feeding schedule). Use a harness and leash and focus on classical conditioning at the beginning: feeding your dog in the presence of the cat without worrying about having your dog offer behaviors (that can come later). Avoid having your dog approach to sniff the cat, this usually makes things worse. If you need more guidance you can always consider signing up for my Mat Work training. This is the foundation that the dog in this video had before attempting to do any training with the cat. Hi! My name is Alyssa Rose. I'm the one that created this video. If I understand correctly - your dog is not very motivated for food. I would suggest starting off by getting your dog on a healthy feeding routine. This can make all the difference in a good training plan. Here's a video that talks about why this is so important and what to do to make a positive difference in eating habits: ruclips.net/video/ilgM5IYjIG8/видео.html From there I would suggest training that focuses on relaxation training. This is training that focuses on conditioning a calm baseline, and building from that baseline. You can look at Karen Overall's relaxation protocol. I also teach classes about this. If you are interested you can find out more about these classes here: legendsdogtraining.com/online-classes/ Mat Work is the best starting point. This will take you through the necessary steps in creating a solid foundation, and then it guides you through how to use this foundation in real world situations to create a calm connection with your dog. Hope this is helpful! - Alyssa

    I know this video is old but I’m hoping someone answers. My boyfriend has two dogs so we don’t know how to approach training his dogs a miniature schnauzer and pitbull. I have two cats. The pitbull has already cornered my cats and gotten hurt. We keep them separated. There has been times the cats dash out and run into the dogs. The little one is fine when the bugs dogs not around but when she is she corners my cats for the bigger dog. I’m super scared and my boyfriend doesn’t think his pitbull is trying to hurt my cat but it looks like she is and I’m about to move out if I can’t figure this out for their safety.

    • @legendsdogtraining
      @legendsdogtraining 10 месяцев назад

      Hi! My name is Alyssa Rose. I'm the one that created this video. Here's what I would suggest: 1. Management. I know you said that you are keeping them separated. If there is anything that you can do to improve this set up, I would do that. I typically recommend double barriers. Like a closed door + an extra tall baby gate. This way if one fails (the cats dash out or someone forgets to close a gate securely), you still have a second as back up. If you are using a baby gate it should have vertical bars and open and close on a hinge. They sell white ones like this at Home Depot. 2. Calming exercises. The dog in this video did a few weeks of relaxation exercises before we started doing the training with the cat. These are exercises that are done on a training mat, and that focus on conditioning a calm physiological response. Once this is established you can begin to integrate the relaxation training with the cats. If you have a baby gate you can use this in a training set up. Place the cat's breakfast on one side of the baby gate while you train with one or both dogs on the other side. You can look at Karen Overall's relaxation protocol. I also teach a class that takes you through these steps. Here's a link: legendsdogtraining.com/online-classes/ Mat Work would be the best starting point. Hope this is helpful! - Alyssa Rose

      @@danielleedmondson3347unfortunately no. Our staffy has cornered the cat again and gotten her face scratched and a slight ripped inner lid. I live in a loft and they can see eachother from the second floor but the cats will not go downstairs if I try to switch them. They have for whatever reason randomly gone done and the dogs just chase them. I have a staffy and mini schnauzer and they just don’t listen. They’re my boyfriends dogs so they’ve never been trained to do anything really. The staffy is turning 13 and people are telling me it’s too late to change her mindset.

    ok so i rescued a kitten, she’s 14 weeks old now, i’ve had my GSD for 4 years, he’s my literal baby🤣 he has a high prey drive (chases squirrels and birds etc) but with my kitten he whines loudly when i’m playing with her or when she’s running around, but he wags his tail steadily in a mid position, and will go in a play bow when she runs up to him at the baby gate. he also does lip licks around her. when she’s stuck her paws thru he’s tried to grab them with his mouth, so i’m wondering if he’s being aggressive or if he’s curious as to what she is and wants to play? he’s never growled at her or gone completely stiff, he’ll stare her down and whine/wag his tail but i can’t tell if he wants to attack her or play. she wants to play with him i can tell definitely. i’ve kept her in a separate room and worked on intros for 2 months now. also have recently done intros while she’s free roaming and i have his muzzle on him and he’s leashed in a place next to me, they’ve touched noses and nothing happened (with and without muzzle)

      Hi! My name is Alyssa Rose, I created this video. The key thing here is that he isn't over-excited by the kitten. Even if he's not aggressive, he could still unintentionally hurt the kitten if he's not able to think through his excitement. My recommendation would be to focus on relaxation training. This is training that focuses on conditioning a calm physiological response. This is what we did with Ludo (the dog in the video) n the first 3 weeks of training, before introducing him to the cat. You can look at Karen Overall's relaxation protocol. I also teach a variation of this in online classes. If you are interested, here is a link: legendsdogtraining.com/online-classes/ Mat Work would be the best starting point. The first 3 weeks focus on the foundation, and weeks 4, 5 and 6 look at how to use that foundation with real world triggers, like the resident kitten. Hope this is helpful! - Alyssa Rose

    • @legendsdogtraining
      @legendsdogtraining 10 месяцев назад

      Hi! My name is Alyssa Rose, I'm the one that created this video. It is a process. A few things happened.... 1. Management. We minimized the amount that they were left alone and rehearsing anxious behavior, like barking, pacing, stress whining. 2. Relaxation training. I started working on exercises that conditioned calm physiological responses. These patterned exercises are paired with functional behaviors like calmly sitting or lying down. 3. Short Departures. I introduced short departures where they could either work on a bully stick/ frozen kong or offer a calm sit, or a calm down if they started to feel anxious. With time you can build on the duration of the departure, and the departure becomes a neutral event. As opposed to something that triggers anxiety. I teach classes about the training. If you're interested you can go here: legendsdogtraining.com/online-classes/ Mat Work is the best starting point. The classes are geared more towards environmental triggers (ie. dogs that are reactive to other dogs, noises, moving objects ..) but the same concepts can be applied to separation anxiety. Weekly Office Hours gives me the opportunity to supplement the training based on the dog's individual needs. Hope this is helpful! Alyssa Rose

      Hi! My name is Alyssa Rose, the one that created this video. I'm so glad you found it helpful. The specific type of harness doesn't matter as much until adolesence / early adulthood. For puppies I would choose any type of harness that is easy to take on and off (and doesn't get caught as you pull it over their ears). I personally use Wonder Walker harnesses. They don't sell these in most pet stores, but you can buy it from their website. When introducing a harness I would pair it with some simple, short training sessions using food to create positive associations. If you're interested I also teach online classes. Here's a link if you would like to check out the classes: legendsdogtraining.com/online-classes/ I have a puppy class, but as your pup is nearing the 5 month mark I would say that Mat Work would probably be the best fit. When I adopted my dog in December he only wanted can type junk dog food. It's obvious by his behaviour he was given a lot of junk food. To this day begs, but knows we won't give, so will eventually lay down while we eat. Doctor wanted him to have Science Diet for seniors, dry, but would not eat all by itself. I give a small sliver of Healthy Pet roll smashed and smaller qty of SD dry. I was shocked to hear in your video the feeding qty suggested is often too much. I've tried to give him carrots, berries, some broccoli, but so far no interest.

    Thank you. My sweet son died suddenly. He left behind his senior cat. We were able to find - what we thought was a good home for her - nine months later, I got a phone call saying it isn't working out. The cat "attacked her dog". My little senior dog doesn't get along with cats but I'm left with no choice right now. I hate to put my dog in this situation. I'm hoping he can relax with the cat. Vise versa. I don't want her given to just anyone! She was my son's friend! So I'm picking her up tomorrow. I'm trying to figure out how to make this work. Your video gives me some hope that I won't have to re-home her again. A shelter is NOT AN OPTION! Any other suggestions to get them okay together will be much appreciated.

      Hi Kerry, I'm so sorry to hear about your son. The right management is just as important as the training. Having a double barrier is a great idea. This could be a solid door, as well as, an extra tall baby gate that swings on a hinge. Although cats are able to jump gates, sometimes this can still help to encourage the dog and the cat to maintain space from each other. The gate can also be used for training/ bonding activities. For example you could place a mats on either side of the gate and hand feeds treats. If the dog and the cat are accustomed to eating on a feeding schedule - you can also incorporate breakfast or dinner into this routine. The reason this is so effective is because it lowers stress and creates calm, positive associations with one another. This works just as well for cats that have aggressive tendencies, as it does for dogs. I lost my mom a few years ago and we adopted her senior dog that had anxiety and aggression issues. I know how important it is to make this integration work. Wishing you the best in your efforts. Alyssa Rose

    I have a 1 year old farm dog Rory, who is a mixed breed golden retriever- German Sheppard mix. Barking isn't a problem as I want him to protect the yard and keep animals off the garden. But he doesn't come when called. He is on a long chain because every time he gets loose he runs away. He sometimes refuses to come to me for our twice daily walks around my large yards yardsite. He often bites my ankles and shoes, won't play fetch, or if he does, won't bring the ball to me. I'm going to try the hand feeding to earn trust. I try to stay calm, but have yelled in anger a few times. I know I'm the problem, but live in a tiny remote town where getting training is near impossible. Help!

      Hey! Thanks for watching. I like that your focus in on earning trust, this is one of the most important parts of training. I teach online classes that can be watched at your convenience, and for anyone enrolled in class I offer weekly Office Hours where people can ask questions about the training or any challenges that might present along the way. Mat Work is the best starting point . Here's a link if you're interested: legendsdogtraining.com/online-classes/ Best, Alyssa

    We have a 3 year old Border Collie, Lyla, and have given her some basic training, mostly with encouragement and petting and less with food rewards. Recently, it has come to my realization that all along she has also been training me. She does this with the famous Collie Eye and movement as to where she wants me to go and what she wants me to do. Before Lyla we had Zeus, Rottie/Lab mix, who was pretty smart, but Border Collies are at a completely different level.

    Some people here are commenting outrageous stuffs nobody asked them about. I mean, people are people, one reason dogs of any breed are better than those know-it-all people. It is funny people cannot just shut up at once when they have nothing creative to say. Overall, I am impressed with that Dobies drive & focus; he is pretty huge too! I wonder how tall was he when this was shot. Also, when did Dobies stop growing?,

    Tip of advice distract your dog as well I put peanut butter on a toy so my dog could lick it and be calm around my cats so far they have been doing great I also did this for a prolonged time you could sit their with your dog and calm them down hug them let them let them know it’s ok be stern if need be tho this is good advice aswell my rescue husky is amazing around my cats he could careless if they run by except sometimes he wants to play and I let him know he has passed their comfort level let’s try again later today and do little at a time what you want to do if you already have cats or a dog slowly introduce them by keeping them separate trade smells of the each of them to get their sent and then let them both be lose with supervision keep doing it everyday so far it’s only taken me about 4days and they are doing fantastic also a good tip try to feed them close together just move their food or give treat near each other slowly closer and closer until they trust each other my dog lets my cats drink out of his bowl even eat some of his food he also eats their food
